CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Miami offensive tackle Vernon Carey has a high left ankle sprain but should return to practice this week, coach Larry Coker said Monday.

Carey was hurt Sunday when running back Frank Gore landed on the back of his leg near the end of practice. The 6-foot-5, 355-pound senior fell to the ground and rolled around screaming in pain and clutching his lower leg.

He then had to be carted off the field, making the injury appear serious. But X-rays Monday revealed a sprain.

"We feel very good about it," Coker said. "It's always a concern when anybody goes down, so it's very good news for us."

Coker said he expected Carey, who started every game at right tackle last season, to return to practice Wednesday and be ready for the Aug. 28 season opener at Louisiana Tech.
