Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Calvin Maduro becomes the first player from Aruba to get a hit in the major leagues. "I called my mom in the morning," Maduro says. "She said 'You got a hit?' I didn't tell her it was a 26-hopper. I told her it was a line shot to left."

In a ceremony at New York's Shea Stadium, acting commissioner Bud Selig retires Jackie Robinson's No. 42 in perpetuity.

The Chicago Cubs win the second game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets to end a 14-game losing streak. The Cubs' 0-14 start is the worst in National League history. During the streak, they are outscored 78-36.

  Baltimore Orioles second baseman Roberto Alomar and umpire John Hirschbeck step onto the same field for the first time since Alomar spit in Hirschbeck's face in September 1996. Hirschbeck resists the urge to kick Alomar in the shins.   Rick Reed of the New York Mets pitches a seven-hitter to beat the Cincinnati Reds, 7-2. Reed, a former replacement player for the Reds, was treated with icy disdain by his then-teammates after the 1994-95 strike ended. Who says revenge isn't sweet?
