Chicago White Sox outfielder Albert Belle returns to
Cleveland to face his former fans, who felt betrayed when
he left the Indians as a free agent. The fans heckle Belle
mercilessly and pelt him with debris. After the final out,
Belle flips them the
bird.

Outfielder Eric Davis of the Orioles undergoes surgery to
remove a cancerous growth in his colon.

Mariners pitcher Randy Johnson strikes out 19 Oakland A's.
Seattle loses the game, 4-1, and Johnson's feat is
overshadowed further by Mark McGwire's 538-foot home
run. "I was kind of enamored by the length of the
ball," Johnson says of McGwire's homer. "I've
never seen a person hit a ball that
far."

Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Wilton Guerrero is
ejected for using a corked bat against the St. Louis
Cardinals. Guerrero breaks his bat on a groundout to open
the game, and umpires become suspicious when he races to
retrieve pieces of the
shattered bat. Guerrero is suspended for eight
games.

Alex Rodriguez becomes the first Seattle Mariner to hit for
the cycle. As part of a promotion, Pamela Altazan, a fan
from Cashmere, Washington, wins $1
million.

Florida Marlins pitcher Kevin Brown strikes out seven and
throws the majors' first no-hitter, beating the San
Francisco Giants, 9-0. Brown comes within one hit batsman
of a perfect game. Five weeks later, Brown one-hits the
Los Angeles Dodgers.
