O's trade for Padres' Pete Smith Journeyman will join Baltimore's injury-thinned staffPosted: Tuesday June 09, 1998 05:02 PM
BALTIMORE (CNN/SI) – The Baltimore Orioles, trying to strengthen a pitching staff weakened by injuries and poor performances, on Tuesday acquired journeyman right-hander Pete Smith from the San Diego Padres for a minor league pitcher. Baltimore, which trails the first-place New York Yankees by 17 games in the American League East and the Boston Red Sox by six games for the wild card spot, dealt right-hander Eric Estes to the Padres. The defending division champs designated right-hander Richie Lewis for assignment. The 32-year-old Smith was 3-2 with a 4.78 ERA for San Diego, where he began the season in the starting rotation. He was 3-2 with a 3.08 ERA in his first five starts before posting an 8.78 ERA in his last three, prompting a move to the bullpen. Smith, who matched a career high with seven wins last season for the Padres, is 52-51 over his 11-year major league career, which includes stints with the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds.
