Orioles edge Philly 5-2 in 10 innings Posted: Thursday June 11, 1998 12:17 AM
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- This was the matchup the Baltimore Orioles wanted -- Rafael Palmeiro vs. Mark Leiter. Palmeiro hit a tiebreaking single off Leiter in the 10th inning Wednesday night and the Orioles beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2. Palmeiro is 13-for-20 (.650) lifetime against Leiter, including three homers. "It's one of those weird things in baseball," Palmeiro said. "It's not like he's easy to hit. I was just looking for a fastball that I could hit somewhere in the outfield." Palmeiro's single was just over second baseman Mark Lewis' glove and scored Jeff Reboulet, who opened the inning with a double off Leiter (2-2). "I know Leiter's not real comfortable against Palmeiro, but he's a lot better pitcher than he has been," Philadelphia manager Terry Francona said. "He got a fastball and he hit it." With two outs, B.J. Surhoff added insurance with a two-run single. Armando Benitez (2-1) pitched two innings for the victory. Benitez allowed two hits, including a triple high off the right-field wall by Desi Relaford in the ninth. He struck out three. "Armando stepped it up," Baltimore manager Ray Miller said. "He added about 4 mph on his fastball and he had the best slider I've seen him throw." Philadelphia tied it 2-2 in the eighth on consecutive doubles by Gregg Jefferies and Scott Rolen. Reliever Alan Mills got out of a first-and-third jam when Mike Lieberthal grounded into an inning-ending double play. Phillies starter Tyler Green walked seven. He walked Mike Bordick, who was in an 0-for-10 slump, to start the seventh. With two outs, reliever Wayne Gomes gave up Harold Baines' RBI single that put the Orioles ahead 2-1. Green allowed just two hits in 6 2/3 innings. He left the game because of inflammation of the left knee. Scott Erickson pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, striking out a season-high nine and walking one. He also drew a walk and later scored on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to Palmeiro. Notes: Roberto Alomar, who was 0-for-5, batted cleanup for the second time in his career and the first time this season. He became the fifth Orioles player to bat in that position this season in 65 games. ... The Orioles have committed an American League-low 30 errors and have not made one since May 23. ... Philadelphia's Doug Glanville extended his hitting streak to 11 games and has 90 hits, putting him on pace to become the first Phillies player to reach 200 hits since Pete Rose had 208 in 1979. ... Phillies stopper Ricky Bottalico made his third rehabilitation appearance with Class AAA Scranton. The right-hander started and threw 1 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run and two walks. He has missed 44 games after undergoing elbow surgery.
