Orioles acquire Becker from Mets

BALTIMORE (AP) -- In a move to help bring depth to their ailing outfield, the Baltimore Orioles claimed Rich Becker off waivers from the New York Mets on Tuesday and assigned him to the major league roster. To make room, they designated Jesus Tavarez for assignment.

Becker, 26, was a career .267 hitter in parts of five seasons with the Minnesota Twins before struggling in his first season with the Mets. With Brady Anderson (pulled quadriceps muscle) and Eric Davis (sore right elbow) ailing and Jeffrey Hammonds on the disabled list with a sore back, the Orioles expect to give the left-handed Becker plenty of playing time.

"He's a younger guy with good foot speed and he can play all three outfield positions," Orioles manager Ray Miller said. "He's another live body."
