Ready to repeat

Kentucky treats crowd to crazy sneak preview

With Kentucky coach Tubby Smith dressed as Don King and his players costumed as professional wrestlers, the defending NCAA champion Wildcats tipped off their season at the stroke of midnight Saturday.

  • Midnight Madness at A&M-Corpus Christi: four fans, two players, one tux

  • Midnight Madness has emerged as college hoops' traditional tip-off
In the 28 years since its advent, Midnight Madness has evolved into an American tradition relished with the same wee-hour gusto as cow-tipping. As the midnight hour approached Friday night, nearly one-third of Division I schools nationwide celebrated in some capacity -- and to some capacity crowds -- the official arrival of college basketball season.

    Jayhawk talks Madness
"Most athletic player in the nation: Kenny Gregory. I have never seen a player with better control while in midair. … His performance in the pregame warmups and practice tonight ["Late Night with Roy Williams"] was nothing less than spectacular. … He brought one ball from six feet away from the basket, back to the rim with a toma(jay)hawk slam. It was the pinnacle of the evening. … KU's freshman looked excellent, too. Jeff Carey, Jeff Boschee and John Crider all held their own against the upperclassmen. … Good luck everybody, you'll need it to beat this Jayhawk team. You can stop wishing, there is no 'down' year at KU."
