The Illini redshirt's season has been one typical of most freshmen who hope their rookie highs outnumber their lows. Based on his performance in the Illini's first round victory over Penn, it looks like Williams is ready for a few more highs.
With the Quakers concentrating on stopping Illini leading scorer Corey Bradford, Williams scored a career-high 21 points to lead Illinois to a 68-58 win. "If you put me in a situation, I think it's a matter of just how tough you can be," Williams said afterward. "I have a big heart as a freshman and I'll keep trying to go at it."
It has indeed been a tough season for Williams, a natural shooting guard who has played out of position while running the point. He has adjusted, however. Since losing his starting job for two games at midseason, Williams and the Illini are 13-3.
