SPRINGFIELD, Missouri (Ticker) -- Allen Phillips had 23 points and eight rebounds and Scott Brakebill added 19 and eight to lead Southwest Missouri State to a 77-64 victory over Southern Methodist in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament. William Fontleroy contributed 10 points for Southwest Missouri State (23-10), which shot 50 percent (18-of-36) in the first half for a 43-31 lead at the break. In the first half, Phillips scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting. DeWayne Floyd had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Quinton Ross added 13 and eight off the bench for Southern Methodist (21-9). The Mustangs shot just 34 percent (23-of-68) and fell to 0-2 in the NIT. Southwest Missouri State beat SMU for the first time in three all-time meetings and improved to 6-4 all-time in the NIT. The Bears play Mississippi on Monday or Tuesday in the next round. The Bears pulled away in the first half with a 22-5 run. Phillips had five points on the burst that Fontleroy capped with a fast-break layup for a 43-28 cushion 1:23 before halftime. SMU scored nine straight points to trim the margin to 48-42 when Ross made a layup with 17:01 to go. But the Mustangs came no closer as Southwest Missouri responded with 13 straight points, taking its biggest lead at 61-42 on Brakebill's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 14:15 remaining.
