In a battle of star centers, Old Dominion's Inge Nissen (22 points, 15 rebounds) held Louisiana Tech's Elinore Griffin to two free throws in the second half after she scored 14 of Tech's 32 points before the break. Nancy Lieberman added 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and accounted for six steals. In all, Old Dominion forced 25 turnovers, including 10 steals, and blocked six shots.

They Said It: "She's the best player I've ever played against. I've never played against her before, and I think it took me the entire first half to learn how to defend," Nissen said of Griffin.

Interesting Fact: Lieberman was a member of the 1976 U.S. women's Olympic team, which won a silver medal, while still in high school.

Surprise: Old Dominion eliminated defending champ UCLA in the semifinals.

Firsts: This was the first AIAW championship game to be held at a neutral site. Old Dominion won its first title under the guidance of Marianne Stanley, an Immaculata grad who became the first woman to play on and then coach a team to a national title. Ann Meyers of UCLA became the first woman to sign an NBA contract -- she went to camp with the Indiana Pacers but did not make the team.
