CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- LaQuanda Barksdale recorded 15 points and eight rebounds and Jackie Higgins added 13 and eight to lift 10th-ranked North Carolina to a 70-65 victory over California.

Juana Brown scored 11 points off the bench for North Carolina (9-2), which has won five straight games since a 99-86 loss at eighth-ranked Notre Dame on December 4. The Tar Heels held a 36-27 halftime lead and never trailed thereafter.

Paige Brown scored 14 points and Lauren Ashbaugh added 12 and 11 rebounds for California (5-5), which has lost three in a row. The Golden Bears shot 39 percent (28-of-71) but were 4-of-10 from 3-point range.

Shevaki Jackson, who had 10 points off the bench, made a jumper to cap a 12-4 surge and pull California within 65-62 with a minute remaining. But Juana Brown answered with a 3-pointer 37 seconds later. Bowie sank a 3-pointer with six seconds to go and Nikki Teasley made two free throws after getting fouled on the inbounds pass.

The Golden Bears could not get off a final shot.

North Carolina connected on 46 percent (27-of-59) of its shots, including 39 percent (7-of-18) from behind the arc, and won for the second time in three meetings with California.
