How We Rank 'Em

Sports Illustrated Now that the sun has set on the Bulls' empire, the Western Conference is the land of plenty in the NBA. In winning the 1999 title, the Spurs signaled a geographic shift; now the East is least.

The Heat might pose a threat, but will ultimately be tripped up by Alonzo Mourning's big contract. The Knicks' chemistry is too combustible. The Pacers are showing their age.

Nope, the West is where it's at in the NBA this season. Look for Tim Duncan, David Robinson and the Spurs to snatch a second-straight title.

Sports Illustrated's NBA preview issue profiles a few more talented twosomes, including Toronto's rare pair of dunkin' cousins -- Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady. Also, find out what Phil Jackson foresees for the Lakers this season.

And get the scoop on your team in our exclusive team-by-team Scouting Reports.
