CNNSI.com's Division Previews: Pacific
The key to Golden State's season will be keeping its young
stars (Antawn Jamison, Larry Hughes, Erick Dampier and
Danny Fortson) healthy and happy.
The newcomers need to show something in L.A., or
Michael Olowokandi and Lamar Odom will be in full
"Days Left As a Clipper" countdown mode.
The performance of Shaq and Kobe's supporting cast will
determine how well the Lakers' title defense goes. Isaiah Rider
has to behave, and the frontcourt reserves are crucial.
The Suns need to establish a continuity that was absent
most of last season. The talent is there, but they have to
keep it all together.
If head coach Mike Dunleavy can find a way to keep all the egos
on his team in check, the Blazers could surpass last year's
success
and win their first NBA title since 1977.
The only returning Western Conference point guard with a lower
assist-to-turnover ratio than Sacramento's Jason Williams' 1.99
is Houston's Steve Francis (1.66), who was a rookie last season.
If Vin Baker finally regains his form and Patrick Ewing, Ruben
Patterson and Desmond Mason carry their share of the load, the
Sonics could move up to the West's top tier.
