Resolution in sight? Wang still waiting to join Chinese team for WorldsPosted: Friday August 16, 2002 3:39 PMVANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Wang Zhizhi's status with the Chinese national team should be settled by the time China plays the United States in an exhibition game next Thursday. Coach Wang Fei said Friday that the matter was in the hands of Chinese Basketball Federation officials, but that he expected to have a definitive answer by the time the team travels to Oakland for the exhibition game. "I cannot comment much on the status of Wang Zhizhi," the coach said. Wang Zhizhi angered the Chinese federation in May by refusing to return to China for national team training. He opted instead to stay in Los Angeles and work against American players. Wang told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he was waiting for a phone call from Chinese basketball authorities asking him to join the team. No officials from the national federation were with the team in Vancouver, where China was scheduled to play Canada in an exhibition game Friday night. The Chinese team will move its training base to Denver for four days before traveling to Oakland for its exhibition game against the U.S. team in advance of the World Championships in Indianapolis Aug. 29-Sept. 8. Wang Zhizhi was listed as one of two alternates on the Chinese roster released Aug. 13. Teams have until three days before the World Championships to submit their final roster.
