Bow to the Bambino Babe Ruth slugged his way into baseball’s heart, soul and history George Herman Ruth may be the most recognizable American athlete of the century. "The Babe" hit 714 home runs -- including a then-record 60 in 1927 -- in his 22-year career, most of it spent with the New York Yankees. Ruth was more than a slugger, though. He was a solid pitcher in his early years with the Boston Red Sox, with a lifetime 94-46 record and a 2.28 ERA. And his lifetime batting average of .342 showed he did more than pound the ball.
