Your Take What events should be added to the OlympicsPosted: Tuesday August 03, 1999 01:54 PM
CNN/SI asked users what events they would like to see added to the Summer and Winter Olympics. Many of you thought a good start would be the addition of golf.
Have a four-round Olympic golf tournament. The top 100 rated players in the world would participate. To make it attractive to the players, the winner would receive a five-year exemption for all four majors.
Does it really matter? Adding events to the Olympics simply adds to the pile of events NBC wouldn't dare televise for fear of offending the purported gymnastics/track/ice-skating loving masses. Heaven forbid people are exposed to something new, different, and potentially interesting.
There is one sport I believe has the proper global exposure and is not gender specific that should be added. Although the entire world is not invited, one of the most compelling events going is the Ryder cup. You could have both team and individual events in Golf. How about Tiger Woods versus Paul Lawrie for the gold medal? Or Team Sweden taking on Team Canada for the women's team gold? It's been a long time since 1904.
First of all, I would get rid of some of the "crappy" sports like equestrian, synchronized swimming and rhythmic gymnastics. Then I would add athletic sports like rugby, inline skating, skateboarding and squash.
I'd like to see Women's bobsledding at the Winter Olympics. With the growth of Women's sports in general (Women's World Cup Soccer), the women are ready to take center stage, and bobsledding is the perfect "vehicle" to showcase talent.
I believe that bowling should be added to the Olympics. It is a sport of skill and wouldn't take a large venue to take place. A number of other countries (especially Japan) are filled with bowling enthusiasts, and if curling can be an
Olympic sport why not bowling?
ADDED?? Shouldn't the question be what events would you like to see removed? Any sport that is considered for the Olympics should be played in all corners of the globe in the case of the Summer Games and in the appropriate areas for the Winter Games. Triathlon, Ballroom Dancing, Syncro. swimming, Roller Hockey these are not sports played in all of the corners of the world. Its about time we scaled back the games and focused on truly international sports like Track and Field and Swimming! The games are huge and frankly an organizational mess. I for one hope that Toronto does NOT win the bid for the 2008 Games. There are too many sports and to many athletes, lets make it more manageable!
Racquetball should certainly be an Olympic sport. Millions of people worldwide play racquetball, but there is no real forum where the best racquetball players in the world are recognized. The Olympics serve this role for many other sports, and there is no reson that they cannot do the same for racquetball.
The summer Olympics are the stage for the greatest athletes in the world. Why not have the most grueling test of endurance, athleticism, and guts be a part of the Olympics. I am talking about the Ironman Triathlon. Some of the greatest athletes in the world aren't the best swimmers, bikers, or runners, but when you put the three together, there are none better. That is why the Ironman Triathlon should be a part of the Olympic Games.
Lacrosse. It has been a sport for a long time and I think there would be enough interest in it at the Olympics. I think sports that don't involve judging, should be Olympic events rather than ones that do, cause it is always bias like the block judging in figure skating.
Ultimate Frisbee is the sport of the future. It combines the best aspects of soccer, football and basketball and brings its own unique grace and beauty to sports. If Ultimate were a more popular sport, all sports highlight shows would be devoted to it because amazing plays are almost routine in Ultimate. You would be amazed at what some people can do with a "Frisbee."
Cricket. It is a game played by many countries and it invokes a lot of passion. It is a game played in the summer time just like baseball. It is a tremendous team sport which could benefit itself and the Olympic movement with its presence on the international stage.
Ice Dancing? Ballroom dancing? The next obvious choice is ballet. Those are samples of non-athletic sports. This one dwells in the ridiculous category: two-man luge. My choice for the new Summer Olympic sport is Tiddly Winks, which mixes both non-athleticism and ridicule. Juan-Antonio Samaranch should seriously consider this entertaining activity (as the previous "sports" I've mentioned actually are). If he doesn't, the X-Games never turn anything down.
