TOURNAMENT PREVIEW FROM SI'S GARY VAN SICKLE
PGA Tour: Invensys Classic at Las Vegas, Las Vegas
Thomas Levet hopes to make his countrymen proud at this weekend's Trophee Lancome.

The casinos will notice that I'm not there, because they will have a drop in revenue. The last time I was in Sin City I lost a lot of money playing blackjack. Thankfully, I decided to do something I know a little bit more about and ended up making a couple of football parlays and earning my money back. Let's just say I learned my lesson about playing cards. But back to golf: Scott McCarron is a Nevada (Montro) resident, he's a long hitter, and when he gets hot he makes a million birdies. And that's this tournament -- first to a million birdies wins.

Senior PGA Tour:
Napa Valley Championship, Napa, Calif.

Let's go with Bruce Fleisher. He has had an OK year, but he has slipped a notch from what he's done in the past. Maybe he has a little left in him. With Hale Irwin not around, let's see if Fleisher can sneak in there. Also keep an eye on Gary McCord, who took Irwin to a playoff last week in Hawaii. He has sort of come back from the dead and is in line to finish in the top 30 on the money list, which would make him exempt for next season.

LPGA Tour:
LPGA Tournament of Champions, Semmes, Ala.

Why pick against Annika Sorenstam at this point? She has won nine times this year, and with four more victories will tie Mickey Wright's all-time record for tournament wins in a season. That's something she'd really like to do. We have to go with Sorenstam.

PGA European Tour:
Trophee Lancome, Paris

Despite the presence of defending champion Sergio Garcia, we're going with home-country advantage and native son Thomas Levet. Everyone has forgotten about him since his runner-up finish at the British Open, and he would be a national hero if he won here. When in France, pick a Frenchman. Or something like that.

 GOLFSTATS FROM GOLFONLINE.COM
1. After three months of East Coast golf, with tight, rough-lined fairways, the Tour returns to wide-open desert golf. This lets the long hitters bomb away. Since 1990, three of its 11 winners have had a reputation for hitting the ball long.

2. The 2002 Invensys Classic features one of the largest purses available on the PGA Tour. So don't disregard players who are low on the money list, because they will be hungry to make names for themselves.

ON TOUR WITH GOLFONLINE'S SAL JOHNSON
On page 346 of the LPGA Tour's 2002 Media Guide, there is a sentence describing Mickey Wright's 13 tournament wins in 1963 as "a record that may never be touched." I wasn't the only one to notice it. After Annika Sorenstam won the Samsung World Golf Championship Sunday for her ninth victory this season, a reporter asked if she knew about it. "Yes," she replied with a broad smile, "but you should never say never."

UNDERGROUND GOLFER BY SI'S GARY VAN SICKLE
It's been an amazing year in golf. But what about Annika? Golf's most amazing performer of 2002 continues to be found on page 12 of the sports section. Annika Sorenstam won her ninth LPGA Tour event last weekend at the Samsung World Championship, her 11th tournament win worldwide. She has dominated women's golf even more than Tiger has dominated men's golf. ...
