Rafael Soriano - Soriano threw in the bullpen...
Rafael SorianoSoriano threw in the bullpen without discomfort on Saturday. General manager Frank Wren said Soriano, who opened the season as the closer, is scheduled to come off the disabled list on Monday. Soriano has had discomfort in his right elbow since spring training, and has been on the disabled list twice this season. He has missed 35 games since going on the DL for the second time on June 6. He has pitched in only nine games, recording three saves with a 2.00 ERA.
Tom GlavineGlavine threw off the bullpen mound Saturday for the first time since landing on the disabled list in early June because of a strained left elbow, and said he was encouraged by his work. Glavine said he threw about 40 pitches at about 60 percent effort and said "it went all right.'' He said he tried all his pitches. Glavine plans to take a couple days off before throwing again. Glavine is 2-3 with a 4.85 ERA this season.
Pedro MartinezThe Mets decided to wait until next weekend to let Martinez take the mound again, giving him more time to recover from a groin injury. That means he won't pitch during a three-game series against the Phillies that starts at Shea Stadium on Tuesday. Martinez strained his groin while running the bases on July 7. Five days later, he left his start against Colorado after only four innings because of tightness in his shoulder - he assumed he had changed his delivery to compensate for the groin injury. He flew to Cincinnati on Saturday and threw in the Mets' bullpen during the sixth inning of a 7-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, seeing how the shoulder and groin reacted.
Dmitri YoungYoung was placed on the 15-day disabled list after missing his second straight start Saturday, complaining of having high blood sugar and feeling lightheaded. Young, a diabetic, was pulled out of Friday night's lineup when he said he felt dizzy and had difficulty focusing. The problem with his vision continued on Saturday. Young is hitting .280 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 50 games.
Doug SlatenThe Arizona Diamondbacks placed Slaten on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a strained right knee. Slaten was the losing pitcher in Friday's 8-7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing three hits over 1 1-3 innings including James Loney's solo home run leading off the 11th. Slaten faced two more batters before leaving the game with the knee injury. Slaten is 0-3 with a 4.55 ERA. In 36 appearances, he has walked 11 and struck out 15 in 27 2-3 innings.
Fernando RodneyRodney had his hat size drop from 7 3-4 to 7 3-8 after getting a haircut from teammate Freddy Dolsi. It was Rodney's first haircut since Sept. 2005. Rodney was impressive on the mound with the new 'do, as he pitched 1 1-3 hitless innings and struck out three on Saturday, trimming his ERA to 6.55.
David OrtizOrtiz homered for the third straight game during a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday night. Ortiz is scheduled to play his last rehab game with Pawtucket on Sunday afternoon and then join Double-A Portland on Monday for three more games. The Boston Red Sox slugger has been sidelined since May 30 because of a partially torn tendon sheath in his wrist. He is expected to return to the Red Sox for the home series with the Yankees on July 25.
Gary Matthews Jr.Matthews has a slight tear in his left knee, but there are no plans to perform surgery or place him on the disabled list. The switch-hitting Matthews, hitting .235 with seven homers and 34 RBIs in 89 games, had an MRI on his knee Thursday and met with team doctors Saturday. He irritated the patellar tendon in his left knee last September, knocking him out of the Angels' AL division series against the Red Sox, and the knee has bothered him most of this season. Matthews has started only one of the last seven games and is 5-for-36 with one RBI since June 27.
Juan Castro - The Baltimore Orioles on...
Juan CastroThe Baltimore Orioles on Saturday acquired veteran infielder Juan Castro from the Colorado Rockies in a minor league trade and immediately purchased his contract from Class AAA Norfolk. Baltimore has had trouble filling the hole at shortstop since trading Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros in the offseason, using Luis Hernandez, Brandon Fahey, Alex Cintron, Oscar Salazar and Bynum.
Johnny DamonNew York Yankees left fielder Johnny Damon moved closer to returning to the lineup after taking batting practice prior to Saturdaya??s 4-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Damon was placed on the disabled list on July 6, two days after he sprained his left shoulder while crashing into the wall trying to make a catch. He spent the All-Star break at the Yankeesa?? minor league complex in Tampa, Florida and hit off a tee on Friday. New York manager Joe Girardi said Damon could return to the lineup without having to play in a minor league rehab game.
Adam LoewenOrioles left-hander Adam Loewen has abandoned his career as a pitcher because of a stress fracture in his left elbow, the same injury that sidelined him last season and twice put him on the disabled list this year. Loewen, 24, intends to return to the majors as an outfielder. Had Loewen opted for a second operation on his elbow, it would have taken him at least 18 months to return. And there was no guarantee he would be pain-free or would not re-injure himself.
Omar VizquelSan Francisco Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel had to leave Saturdaya??s game against Milwaukee in the sixth inning with an apparent foot injury. Vizquel was batting against Brewersa?? reliever Mitch Stetter when the 41-year-old shortstop fouled a ball off his left foot. He winced in pain and dropped to the ground before a team trainer and manager Bruce Bochy came out to check on him. Vizquel eventually got to his feet and finished his at-bat, drawing a walk before being replaced by pinch-runner Ivan Ochoa.
Jared BurtonJared Burton, who developed into one of the Cincinnati Reds' most dependable setup relievers, went on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained muscle in his right side. Manager Dusty Baker said Burton was bothered by the injury when he threw on Friday night. The Reds called up right-hander Todd Coffey to take Burtona??s spot in the bullpen.
Brett MyersMyers rejoined the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday after starting four games in the minor leagues trying to shake a season-long slump. Myers has not been activated, but hea??s expected to start one of the Philliesa?? games next week against the Mets in New York. Despite being sent to the minors on July 1, Myers still leads the majors this season with 24 home runs allowed. The Philsa?? opening day starter is 3-9 with an ERA of 5.84, and theya??re 1-11 in his past 12 games.
Daric BartonBarton smacked his head on the bottom of a pool during the All-Star break, requiring six staples to close the gash and leaving the Oakland first baseman with a neck strain that landed him on the disabled list Saturday. The Athletics recalled infielder Wes Bankston from Triple-A Sacramento and started him at first base against the New York Yankees.
