Selita Ebanks's Q&A
The one thing I'm absolutely obsessed with lately is ...
I've been obsessed with a lot of things, but now it's going back to school and volunteering abroad. I never even started school; I'm only 24. I was supposed to go out of high school but I got persuaded to model. I don't regret it -- I've been very blessed in that area but you get to a point where you feel, 'You've accomplished so much; now what?' I have goals of writing books and acting and stuff like that, perhaps one day running for minister of education in the Cayman Islands. I want to be a role model in all those aspects. Right now I'm registered for school and I have a test that I have to take for a Harvard online program. I'm studying for a literature program right now. I'm very excited. I always wanted to be a writer; I interned at Spin Magazine when I was 17. It's an amazing thing now to be accepted to any program having to do with Harvard. If I'm going to go for it, I might as well go all the way. I would love to go to a campus, but at the end of the day you have to be realistic. I don't see myself slowing down and concentrating on just one thing. like school. Right now I'm reading lots of books. I'm reading up on religion now: The Confident Woman by George Meyers. It's very interesting as a woman.
On a quiet, rainy day I usually...
Sleep. I just like to lounge and pop some popcorn and watch a movie. As a kid in the Caymans we had this little shack with a roof made of zinc. I remember the rain beating on the Zinc roof and that was the most amazing thing. I would open all the windows and just have the breeze come through the whole house and listen to the rain. That's very soothing.
If I were giving a tour of my home, the one place I wouldn't show anyone is ...
My walk-in closet. Actually I have two. I am a shoe fanatic. I probably have a lot more shoes than I have clothes. I'm working on building a shoe closet specifically. I have over 100. I tried to count them one day but got frustrated. I can never find the other shoe! I wish someone would call me up and ask if I'd be a shoe sponsor because I buy so many.
I feel a secret connection with ...
Mary J. Blige or even Mariah Carey because they're both so amazingly talented. The conviction in their voice is just so persuasive. They could sing that the sky is blue and I'll definitely be feeling them. Mariah is just so positive and has such a sex appeal.
In a past life I was ...
I think I was a gangster. I definitely think I was Bonnie Parker or something. I think I was a badass. I have seven brothers yet I'm the bully of the family. They call me for everything, even if it's to get a refund for a pair of shoes -- I'm the one they call to bully someone else around. But I do it nicely. I always tell them, 'You need more moxy! You're such yellowbellies!'
If I didn't have any responsibilities tomorrow morning, I would spend tonight ...
I would probably go somewhere Chuck E. Cheese, or Go-Karting. I'm a goofball. I was at Chuck E. Cheese two weeks ago! You remember skee-ball? When I was a kid I used to just run up to it and drop the ball in the 1000 hole. But I can't get away with that anymore. I had to bribe a 5-year-old to do it. We ended up buying pizza for all these random kids.
If I didn't have any responsibilities for a week, I would go to ...
Right now I'm looking for a free week where I can go volunteer in Ghana.
If you asked my friends about me, the first thing they would tell you is ...
I'm silly. My nickname is 'silly' and it's so true.
If I were going to a costume party tonight, I would dress as ...
I always wanted to be Jessica Rabbit, but that's kind of cliché. I would probably go as something big and hot and stinky like a mascot. Maybe a rabbit suit.
When I get dressed to go to the grocery store, my clothing inspiration is ...
Never wear make-up -- unless I know there will be pictures. People who know me know that I also don't comb my hair. It gets ratty. They call me rat's nest. So if I'm going to the store I'll throw on a baseball cap, shades and flip flops.
When I get dressed up for a party, my clothing inspiration is...
Whatever's hot right now. Right now I'm all about indulgent dresses with a lot of detail.
One thing I do only when I'm home completely alone is...
That's rare. Whenever I have alone time I call my family or fly them in. I need them to keep me sane and pull me back down to earth.
If I had to spend $1 million right now, I would ...
I would invest in some things for my portfolio. Probably buy a clothing line or something like that. Right now I have a billion little ideas about how to invest my money -- start a clothing line, etc. -- on how I can move on to the next level. That's what I'm going through right now. I wouldn't buy a house or anything like that.
If I had to spend $10 right now, I would ...
I would probably go to the candy store. I love Twizzlers because you can eat so many of them and you never even realize it because they aren't so sweet. I can eat a whole supersized bag -- the family size. And they don't get stuck in your teeth!
The one place I've seen that I'll never forget is ...
Morocco. I was shooting a catalog there and it was great because this photographer would bring me to the most beautiful places like Scotland and Ireland, but Morocco was the best. The roads were so dirty with feces -- so stinky. But it was so real. To see women sitting on the side of the road -- almost selling their children -- was so sad. It made me want to do more for the world.
What is your favorite beach?
The Cayman. You have to go to Rum Point. It's so beautiful. There's volleyball and hammocks and a cute little bar. You get island food and it's so good. It's a bit of a tourist spot now, but the locals still go there. There's shallow water so you can walk all the way out and watch the sunset as the island turns red. You could be the palest woman in the world, but after a day there, you'll have a bronze tan. Whenever I go to the Caymans, I make sure we spend at least one day there. We're on the road by noon and stop at this fish hut and get fried snappers and groupers, and you put onions on it. We take our fish to Rum Point and eat it there. You sit and have drinks, sit in a hammock and sit on the beach at the edge of the sand till sunset. It's the most amazing thing.
I have a secret crush on an athlete ..
I used to have crushes. Not so much on people themselves. If I'm a fan of someone then I don't really want to meet them. I don't really have a crush like that though. Athlete? I can't give a name. I don't want to get in trouble. I don't have a specific one. Well, it's not a crush, but I love [Knicks guard] Nate Robinson. I love that he's 5-foot-9 and can dunk. I'm only 5-8, so I love that. I think it's amazing when people who are considered below average in their field accomplish so much. I've met him a few times, and I'm always like, 'What's up little man?'
If I could be anything but a model, I would be ...
I would probably be a lawyer, because that's the direction I was heading in before. But if I could, I'd like to be a novelist. When I was in high school I won awards for writing fiction. But now I'm trying to figure out what I want to write. By the time this prints, I'll probably have a poetry book out. I might do a self-help book. And I'm working on my mother's story. I might put it into a book or a movie.
In a group of people, I'm always the first to ...
To break the ice. I'm the outgoing one, and I love to laugh. I'm a people-pleaser. No matter what the situation, it could always be worse.
To impress a cute man at a bar, I would ...
I can flare my nose, but I think everyone can do that. To impress a guy, I'd crack a joke. I can make one up. Or I'd just start dancing crazy and make the guy laugh.
The one thing I'm superstitious about is ...
I'm a Caribbean woman and that's their whole thing, but I try not to be superstitious. They're crazy. If you put a hat on a bed, etc. ... My grandma and mom were always reminding me, 'Don't step on a crack ... don't do this ... don't do that.' I'm like, 'Come on! Jeezum peasum! Give me some oxygen!' I try not to have any of those superstitions.
Where's your hometown?
Georgetown, Cayman Islands
Where's the one place you have to go when you're in your hometown?
I definitely make sure to listen to some good old Caribbean Calypso; go see a live band. There's this place called Royal Palms that on Saturday Night -- when everything closes on midnight -- we have some drinks and listen to music and catch up with old friends. I go back to my roots there. And another thing is I love to go visit the schools. Georgetown Primary, where I went. I love to bring them gifts -- some UNICEF books. Last time, this little boy came up and he was selling these little hand-painted bobblehead toys. They're so cute and he must have been like 10 and he spoke such great English. So I bought like 40 of them. I'll take them to some kids somewhere else and teach them about how kids in a different part of the world live, and how it's important to appreciate that.
Which sports did you play?
I grew up playing basketball, football and soccer and playing track, and I have a ton of medals ... But not any more. I can barely walk and talk on a cell phone now. I'm all into the games on TV though. The NBA playoffs are on now and that's all I watch. And I'm a good trash talker, which you need to be to enjoy sports, especially when you grew up with 10 boys. Whether you're playing dominoes or spades or basketball, you have to get into their heads. If you come with me to a game, I'm the loudest one. I have my own cheering section.
