Southern 34, South Carolina State 28:

Jermaine West rushed for three touchdowns and Steve Wofford carried 26 times for a Heritage Bowl-record 164 yards as Southern University defeated South Carolina State, 34-28, at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

South Carolina State QB Reggie Curry has 12 TDs vs. 5 INTs, but completes only 37 percent of his throws. RBs Dennis Walker and Chad Eaddy carry the ball and the team, with about 1,300 yards between them. Southern will throw, but the Jaguars' strength is with RB Steve Wofford (12 TDs, 5.2 yards a carry).

Southern's only loss came to Florida A&M, a 33-3 blowout. FAMU also beat South Carolina State, 22-20. Neither Southern or S.C. State throws the ball very well, so this is truly a game for the runners -- and that favors Southern.

Southern likes to throw, but shouldn't -- QB Marcus Jacoby has 13 TDs and 10 INTs.
