The Texas Longhorns expected the game to hinge on how well
they could contain Navy's slippery quarterback, Roger
Staubach. So in his preparations for the artful Roger,
Longhorns coach Darrell Royal employed a variety of
scramblers to lead his scout team
in practice. It paid off, as UT held Staubach to
minus 47 yards
rushing
Defensively, Navy dared Texas to throw the ball, which the
Horns did with splendid results. Duke Carlisle tossed
first-half touchdowns of 58 and 63 yards to Phil Harris,
and Texas never looked back. One Navy supporter did his
best to find a silver
lining. "I'm going over to the Texas dressing room right
now and congratulate those boys," said Rear Adm.
Charles Kirkpatrick, the Naval Academy superintendent.
"Maybe a few of them might want to join the
Navy."
