The stingy Crimson Tide defense threw everything it had at
Miami, sometimes lining up all 11 players on the line,
often showing one look and then shifting to another. Miami
quarterback Gino Torretta looked clueless, throwing three
interceptions, each of
which led to a 'Bama touchdown. His best toss of the day
was a strike to Lamar Thomas, a sprinter on Miami's track
team. Thomas was on his way to an 89-yard touchdown that
would have cut into a 27-6 'Bama lead when cornerback
George Teague caught him
from behind and stripped, in short order, the ball, Thomas's
pride and any chance the Hurricanes had at staying in the
game. Crimson Tide quarterback Jay Barker threw for just 18
yards, but Derrick Lassic rushed for 135 to provide enough
offense for the
easy win. "They said we were one-dimensional," said
Alabama center Tobie Sheils of the yardage disparity.
"We
are one-dimensional. Sometimes you only need one
dimension."
