Florida State coach Bobby Bowden waited 28 years for his
first national championship. When the time finally came he
had to win it twice. Scott Bentley's 22-yard field goal
gave the Seminoles the lead with 24 seconds left. A few
plays later, Nebraska
tight end Trumane Bell caught a pass in Florida State territory
and was brought down as time expired. Bowden was doused
with ice water and the celebration was about to really get
going when the officials ruled that one second remained
when Bell's knee
touched the ground. That gave the Huskers another life. They
lined up for a 45-yard field goal, but Byron Bennett missed
wide left. Bowden began celebration No. 2, one that was
well worth the
wait.
