Pete Dawkins was captain of the 1958 Army team, a triple-threat as a runner, receiver and passer, leading the Cadets to an undefeated season and winning the Heisman Trophy, one of only three Army winners in history, and it was very clear where the priorities fell.

"At Army, there was more emphasis on 'Let's win at Notre Dame next week' or 'Let's make sure we beat Navy.' Those (thoughts) were much more dominant than, gee, it would be exciting if he won the Heisman."

Following his stellar playing career, Dawkins attended Oxford as a Rhodes scholar and eventually settled into a 24-year military career, reaching the rank of Brigadier General. Still, it was the Heisman that dominated.

"It's humbling and astounding to me that all over the world when people find out you're a Heisman winner, they immediately identify with it. It epitomizes what college football is all about."
