Bowl Championship Series worked

Kansas State's collapse against Texas A&M and freefall into the Alamo Bowl proves there is merit to the argument about strength of schedule. If Kansas State had played in more big games, they would have known how to close the sale against the Aggies. That said, the Big 12 Conference is at fault for not having a better place for the Wildcats to land. You can say the Orange Bowl is to blame for picking Florida. But there's no reason Kansas State shouldn't have bumped Texas out of the Cotton or Nebraska out of the Holiday. It's no coincidence that the Big 12 has operated this season without a commissioner. One thing commissioners do is make decisions that work out for everyone in the league. Nothing worked out for Kansas State. Someone should say it -- the Bowl Championship Series worked. If you wait until everybody finishes their season, things work themselves out, which is why the consensus one and two, Tennessee and Florida State, will play for the national championship. That doesn't please anyone at Ohio State but there isn't a system on God's green earth that can put three teams on two sidelines. If you still don't like the BCS and want a playoff, there's good news for you, too. It's the university presidents who don't want a playoff. But I bet there's a convert at Kansas State. The Texas tailback's performance against Texas A&M answered the last question I had about him, which was his ability to play big in big games. No. 2 on my ballot is Cade McNown of UCLA, whose incredible performance against Miami was overshadowed by the upset loss. Three, Donovan McNabb of Syracuse. The bigger the game, the better he played. That's why, on my ballot, he and McNown rated ahead of Mike Bishop of Kansas State. New world order in South Carolina footballThe state of football in the state of South Carolina is upside down. Fired South Carolina coach Brad Scott has gone to Clemson to work for Tommy Bowden, which is like Newt Gingrich signing on with the Gore campaign. On top of that, Clemson's grand tradition of running the ball is out the window with Bowden on board. He had the nation's leading passer at Tulane this season in Shaun King. Meanwhile, no one loves to run the ball more than new Gamecocks coach Lou Holtz. You get the feeling each school hired the other one's coach.
