No Roses for Howard

Stanford defensive tackle out with knee injury

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Stanford defensive tackle Willie Howard will miss the Rose Bowl game against Wisconsin because of ligament damage in his right knee.

Howard, injured in the first quarter of Stanford's 40-37 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday, will be on crutches for several weeks and then considered for surgery, Cardinal trainer Dale Rudd said.

It is unclear whether Howard, a redshirt junior who leads the Cardinal with 10 sacks and 18 tackles for loss this season, will rejoin the team for spring drills in five months.

"I got the results (Monday night)," said Howard, who is 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds. "I'm dealing with the reality of it."

Howard has been Stanford's best defender against the run. His absence could be problematic against Badger tailback Ron Dayne, who set the NCAA career rushing record.

"It hurts any time you lose a young man in the system who has such a tremendous impact," Cardinal coach Tyrone Willingham said.

The loss of Howard pokes another hole in Stanford's porous defense, which has allowed an average of 31.5 points per game this season.

Junior Dorean Kass or sophomore Travis Pfeifer are likely to replace Howard in the New Year's Day lineup.
