Wednesday Roundup Broncos' Romanowski goes on trial TuesdayUpdated: Thursday June 21, 2001 12:23 AM
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (AP) -- Denver Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski will go to trial Tuesday on charges he illegally received a prescription drug. He is accused of obtaining the appetite suppressant phentermine that had been prescribed for his wife, Julie, and a family friend. Phentermine also acts as a stimulant to the central nervous system. A judge ruled that statements the player and his wife made to investigators in 1999 could not be used because the investigators illegally entered the couple's home. But District Attorney Jim Peters says there is enough evidence to proceed. Bill Romanowski is charged with one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, two counts of conspiracy and one count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and deceit. Julie Romanowski is charged with eight counts of illegally obtaining diet pills and one count of conspiracy. Her trial is scheduled Aug. 14. Dr. Randall Snook pleaded guilty to providing the diet pills and was sentenced to 18 months' probation.

He was operated on last week for what the team called a minor procedure. He could miss training camp, which starts July 26. McGinest participated in the team's non-contact, four-day minicamp two weeks ago. If he does show at training camp, he would take part on a limited basis. McGinest, a 29-year-old player who made the Pro Bowl in 1996, has had injury problems throughout his eight-year career. He started 14 of 16 games last season, finishing with 63 tackles and six sacks.

Martin, 35, spent the last two seasons with Miami and was waived in February. He worked out with the Falcons on Tuesday, taking passes from quarterback Chris Chandler. "Just throwing the ball to him, you're reminded of what happened in '98," Chandler said. "He made a lot of us better." Martin, a 12-year veteran was released by Atlanta after the 1999 Super Bowl because he would not postpone a $400,000 roster bonus while facing legal problems. He was acquitted of money laundering and conspiracy charges in Florida. Martin was a deep threat who loosened up defenses and caught 66 passes for 1,181 yards and six touchdowns for the Falcons. He missed six games last season with a stress fracture in his left foot and caught 26 passes for 393 yards and no touchdowns. On Tuesday, he said he was in the best shape of his life. The Falcons also signed wide receiver Quentin McCord, a seventh-round draft choice from Kentucky. He is the last of the team's 10 draftees to sign. The Packers also said that rookie offensive tackle Kevin Jordan has been waived because of a knee injury but will revert to injured reserve status with the team if he is not claimed on waivers.
