DENVER (AP) -- Douglas County prosecutors dropped charges Wednesday against the wife of Denver Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski in a prescription drug case.

Julie Romanowski faced eight counts of illegally obtaining the diet drug phentermine for her husband and one count of conspiracy. Bill Romanowski was acquitted on related charges last month.

In a statement, the Douglas County District Attorney's Office said there was little chance Julie Romanowski would be found guilty after her husband was acquitted.

Bill Romanowski, 35, was acquitted June 29 on charges of illegally obtaining the diet pills.

Dean Jakubczak, the jury foreman in that trial, said jurors didn't believe it was illegal for Bill Romanowski to have the drugs because the prescriptions were intended for him, even though they were written under other people's names.

Prosecutors claimed Bill Romanowski took phentermine to enhance his play. The defense said Romanowski took it only to suppress his hunger before games. The drug is not banned by the NFL.

His lawyers also argued that investigators targeted Romanowski because of his fame.
