Glenn unlikely to play Sunday Posted: Friday January 15, 1999 10:39 PM
DENVER (AP) -- The New York Jets likely will be without Pro Bowl cornerback Aaron Glenn for Sunday's AFC Championship game. Coach Bill Parcells said Friday upon his team's arrival in Denver that Glenn, while listed as questionable with an ankle injury, "doesn't look like he will play." Glenn aggravated the ankle during practice this week. "I won't cancel him out at this moment," Parcells said. While Glenn's absence could be a significant problem for New York's secondary, replacement Ray Mickens has played very well since Glenn was hurt on Dec. 6 against Seattle. Mickens, who usually plays as the nickel back and guards the slot receiver, was solid as a starter on the corner against Miami, Buffalo, New England and in last Sunday's playoff victory over Jacksonville. Glenn, who made the Pro Bowl for the second straight year and led the Jets with six interceptions, was hurt making his last pickoff of the season. He had been beaten for two long touchdowns by Joey Galloway in the first quarter in man coverage -- Glenn's strength. He leaped to grab Jon Kitna's bomb for Galloway and was hurt when he landed. Earlier this week, Glenn admitted the right ankle will hurt him until next season, but was hopeful of playing. Parcells wasn't so sure on Friday. "We played a lot the last 5-6 weeks without him," the coach said. "He had a limited role last week. We'll keep doing with the players who are in there what we've been doing without him." Parcells said Glenn twisted the ankle in practice. "I didn't think it was too serious, but he was not getting around too well," Parcells said of Glenn, who played almost exclusively in nickel situations last weekend. New York's other starting cornerback, Otis Smith, had a good season, but struggled against Jacksonville, allowing two touchdowns. Parcells said Smith was directly responsible for one of them. If Glenn can't go, the Jets might use rookie Kevin Williams, a converted safety, and veteran Marcus Coleman at cornerback behind Smith and Mickens.
