ST. LOUIS (CNN/SI) -- The St. Louis Rams on Thursday acquired three-time Pro Bowl running back Marshall Faulk from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for two picks in this year's NFL Draft.

The Colts received one of the Rams' two second-round picks and their fifth-round pick in Saturday's draft, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King. St. Louis coach Dick Vermeil confirmed only that the picks did not include the Rams' first-round pick.

"We're very excited about it," Vermeil said. "I think it's an outstanding move for our organization. We got what I could say is a Pro Bowl player. Our first-round pick is intact."

Colts officials and Faulk's agent, Rocky Arcenaux, could not be reached immediately for comment.

The deal fills the Rams' biggest pre-draft need. Their top rusher last year, June Henley, had 313 yards. Greg Hill had a few big games early in the season, but missed most of the season with a knee injury and the Rams are worried about his durability.

The Rams had been considering taking Miami running back Edgerrin James with the sixth pick. Now they might set their sights on North Carolina State wide receiver Torry Holt.

Faulk, 26, has two years to go on the original seven-year contract he signed with the Colts at the second overall pick of the 1994 draft. He's to make $2.22 million this year and wants to renegotiate his deal.

Vermeil said the Rams wouldn't be opposed to that.

Faulk is coming off his best year. He rushed for 1,319 yards, caught 86 passes for 908 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. His 2,227 total yards from scrimmage was the sixth-highest total in NFL history.

Faulk was second to Terrell Davis in rushing yards. He was third in the NFL in receptions. He led all NFL running backs in both receptions and reception yards.
