Busy time right before draft Posted: Thursday April 13, 2000 11:51 PM
Former UCLA wide receiver Danny Farmer is expected to be chosen in the second or third round of the 2000 NFL Draft on April 15-16. Farmer caught 29 passes for 573 yards and three touchdowns in his senior year with the Bruins, and is UCLA's career receiving yardage leader with 3,020 yards on 159 career catches. This is the second in a series of draft diaries from Farmer. Since my last diary, several events have taken place to influence the process on the road to the NFL Draft. To start off, I began attending classes again on April 2nd. After opting to concentrate on football during the winter quarter, I was ready to get back to UCLA and finish up classes. At first, it was a little different being on campus after being away for so long, but after a few days, I felt like things were back to normal. I am looking forward to graduating in June with a degree in history from UCLA. However, my education isn't over. I was selected as a finalist for an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, and I am eager to find out if I will receive the award. The most important event since my last diary has been my decision to change agents. I had originally signed with a family friend whom I have the utmost respect for as an agent and a person. However, being located in a different state made it difficult for us to communicate. With nine days left before the draft, I decided to sign with Leigh Steinberg, who is located only an hour away in Newport Beach, California. I can now converse face to face with my agent, and visit his office when needed. Although the switch was tough, I feel that I have made the correct decision. A Washington Redskins area scout came out to time me in the 40-yard dash at UC-Irvine on Monday, April 10th. My times ranged from 4.48 to 4.55. It was nice to be timed again in the 40 with better weather conditions. This workout was important for me because I needed to show teams that my times are consistent. I was pleased with what I ran and am now sending out the video of the workout to several teams. I will be running the 40 again for the Green Bay Packers on Thursday. I am confident that I will run similar times. Overall, I am happy with the way things have turned out in the last couple of weeks. I am back in school, I have a new agent, and I have run great times in my recent workout. With only a few days until the draft, I am starting to get a bit anxious. Some people get nervous at times like this, but I am know that wherever I get drafted, it will be the right place for me. I just can't wait to hear my name called. I know that I have no control over the decisions that are about to be made on Saturday, so I just want to relax and enjoy the whole draft process. I will watch the draft at my house in Los Angeles, with family and friends.
