Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King, covering his 15th NFL Draft, checks in with his observations of the 1998 NFL Draft. He'll be reporting every hour throughout the day ...

PHOENIX (CNN/SI) -- Here are five things I think I think at this hour.

1.) I think the San Francisco 49ers, who drafted do-it-all guy R.W. McQuarters of Oklahoma State as a defensive back and special teams ace and perhaps a spare receiver, will always say about the guy with 4.5-second speed: "I wish he was a step faster."

2.) I think that, watching those highlights of Mississippi tailback John Avery on ESPN a few minutes ago, that he looks like the second coming of Warrick Dunn. Miami may have gotten a true gem as a third-down and changeup back.

3.) I think if I were a Giants fan (and I grew up as a huge one) I'd be disappointed at not getting Victor Riley or Germane Crowell to help my offense. Teams do not live by defense alone.

4.) I think the SEC must play some pretty good football. That conference has supplied 10 of the first 30 players drafted.

5.) I think Peyton Manning will have a very busy day. Noon in New York being the top pick in the draft, 5 p.m. in Indianapolis meeting the press, 9 p.m. in Knoxville having his number retired. The guy's having a year's worth of highlights in nine hours.

Through the day with Peter King:

  • Low first round: Vikes got a great deal in Moss at No. 21
  • Mid first round: Cost just too high to trade around
  • Early first round: Ellis at No. 8? Cowboys reached for that one
  • Top picks: Bears made a great choice in snagging Enis
  • Pre Draft: Manning a lock for No. 1
