Eight is enough Seahawks to get a boost with return of star receiverPosted: Sunday November 07, 1999 07:35 PM
SEATTLE (AP) -- Holdout wide receiver Joey Galloway says he'll report to the Seahawks on Monday, after missing eight games during his contract dispute. Galloway made the announcement on Fox Sports Net on Sunday. "We decided that going in, playing some football and getting the last year of the contract over with would be the best move," Galloway said in the interview, adding he believes he has been "calling the shots all along." By returning to Seattle on Monday, Galloway can spend the minimum 30 days on the roster necessary for this to count as a full season. It would give him five seasons and thus make him eligible for free agency, if the Seahawks don't label him their franchise player. "The first purpose is to play football. That's what I do, that's what I love doing," Galloway said. "Yes, it gives me a lot more options at the end of the season if I am a free agent or labeled a franchise player." Galloway has been fined more than $200,000 for his absence, plus missing his game pay. Galloway said it would be nice to avoid the fines but, he said, "I can't imagine them dropping those fines, so I'll probably have to pay them." Galloway began his holdout because he wanted a five-year contract worth $25 million, plus a $10 million signing bonus. The Seahawks offered a seven-year deal worth $35 million, plus a $7 million signing bonus. In September, the Seahawks took their offer off the table, saying Galloway would have to play for his $1.58 million salary under the terms of his original five-year contract if he wanted to rejoin the team.
