NFL Recap (Washington-Arizona)

Posted: Sun November 8, 1998 at 9:03 p.m. EST

ARIZONA 29, WASHINGTON 27

TEMPE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Jake Plummer had a nearly perfect second half and Joe Nedney kicked a 47-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to lift the Arizona Cardinals to a 29-27 victory over the Washington Redskins.

Plummer completed 16-of-17 passes after halftime and finished 22-of-30 for 186 yards and a touchdown as Arizona improved to 5-4 for the first time since 1991.

After Cary Blanchard kicked a career-high 54-yard field goal to give Washington (1-8) a 27-26 edge with 37 seconds to play, Plummer completed three straight passes to bring the ball to the Washington 36-yard line.

With 16 seconds left, Plummer just avoided a sack and threw an incomplete pass, ending his franchise record of 15 straight completions. Plummer followed by completing a six-yard pass to Eric Metcalf and the Cardinals called time out with eight seconds remaining before Nedney won the game for the second straight week.

Trent Green was 17-of-33 for 183 yards and a touchdown for the Redskins, who are off to their worst start since losing the first nine games in the 1961 season.

After Brian Mitchell's six-yard run gave Washington a 17-7 lead 38 seconds before halftime, the Redskins managed just four yard of offense in the third quarter. The Cardinals marched 80 yards in 10 plays on the first possession of the third, to cut the deficit to 17-14 when Plummer found Larry Centers for a four-yard TD.

The Redskins ran just six plays on offense in the third and Arizona took a 21-17 lead when Mario Bates capped an 11-play, 60-yard drive with a one-yard plunge 2:26 into the fourth. The Cardinals pushed their lead to 23-17 when punter Matt Turk missed the snap from his brother Dan and the ball went out of the end zone.

Arizona started on its own 29 after the free kick and Nedney capped a 12-play, 63-yard drive with a 26-yard field goal to make it 26-17 with 3:09 left. Washington's offense got back on track as Green completed 4-of-6 passes before throwing a 35-yard TD strike to Leslie Shepherd to cut the lead to 26-24 with 1:39 remaining. Fullback Stephen Davis recovered Blanchard's onside kick and Green completed an eight-yard pass to Mitchell on a 4th-and-5 play to set up Blanchard's field goal.

Washington jumped up to a 10-0 lead on a 34-yard field goal by Blanchard at the end of the first quarter and a two-yard TD run by rookie Skip Hicks with 6:30 to go in the second. Arizona made it 10-7 on a one-yard plunge by Bates with two minutes left in the first half. The Redskins struck right back as Green completed passes of 28 and 17 yards to James Thrash and tight end Jamie Asher after a holding call on rookie safety Pat Tillman kept the drive going.
