Week 9 Lions' Crowell turns in stellar performance in big winPosted: Tuesday November 09, 1999 01:14 AM
By David Lundy, CNN/SI ATLANTA (CNN/SI) -- Wide receiver Germane Crowell chose an opportune time to turn in a blowout performance for the Detroit Lions. His eight catches for 163 yards and one touchdown played a pivotal role in the Lions' 31-27 defeat of the St. Louis Rams, catapulting the Lions from early-season curiosity to midseason sole possesser of the NFC Central lead. But Week 9, unlike most of the earlier NFL stanzas, was a showcase for running backs, as nine ball-carriers gained more than 100 yards and three scored two touchdowns. Charlie Garner was a workhouse for the San Francisco 49ers in a losing effort against the Pittsburgh Steelers, toting the ball 20 times for 166 yards. But he failed to reach pay dirt. Ricky Watters scored twice during his 27 carries for 133 yards in the Seahawks victory over the Cincinnati Bengals; Errict Rhett also scored twice for the Baltimore Ravens in their win over the Cleveland Browns; and Olandis Gary helped the Denver Broncos beat the San Diego Chargers with two touchdowns, gaining 108 yards on 30 carries. The Colts' Edgerrin James continues to impress in the combined yards category, gaining 109 yards rushing and 93 as a receiver. As for quarterbacks, the top passer for yardage was Kurt Warner, who continues to turn in impressive numbers for the Rams -- even in losing efforts. Warner threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, although he gave up two interceptions. Peyton Manning came up big in the Indianapolis Colts' win over the Kansas City Chiefs, hitting 21 of 33 passes for 290 yards for one touchdown and one interception. Doug Flutie didn't compile big yardage, but his 211 passing yards for two touchdowns with no interceptions helped ensure a Buffalo Bills' win over the Washington Redskins.
