Norstrom, Ohlund named to World team Posted: Thursday January 21, 1999 03:30 PM
NEW YORK (CNN/SI) -- Thanks to injuries to other players, Los Angeles defenseman Mattias Norstrom and Vancouver defenseman Mattias Ohlund will make their All-Star debuts this weekend in Tampa. Norstrom and Ohlund, teammates on Sweden's 1998 Olympic team in Nagano, Japan, have been added the World All-Star team roster for Sunday's 1999 NHL All-Star game, the NHL announced Wednesday. They replace Detroit's Uwe Krupp and the New York Islanders' Kenny Jonsson, both of whom will miss the game due to injury. Krupp, sidelined since Dec. 22 with a back injury, was elected to a starting position in All-Star fan voting. Jonsson, who suffered a knee injury on Jan. 16, was one of 18 World All-Star Team additions announced Jan. 11. The World All-Star Team defenseman who will replace Krupp in the starting lineup against the North America All-Star team will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 21. Norstrom, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound native of Stockholm, is playing in his sixth NHL season and his fourth with Los Angeles. One of four Kings to appear in all 44 games this season, he has tallied four points (one goal, three assists). Norstrom was a third-round selection of the New York Rangers in the 1992 entry Draft. He was obtained by the Kings in a March, 1996 trade. Ohlund, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound native of Pitea, is a second-year NHL player. He led all rookie defensemen in scoring in 1997-98 with 30 points, and finished second to Boston's Sergei Samsonov in voting for the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie. Ohlund has appeared in all 45 games for Vancouver this season, fourth on the club in scoring with 22 points (6-16-22). He was the Canuck's first choice, 13th overall, in the 1994 entry draft.
