SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- The Germans set a world record Tuesday in the gold medal race for the 4,000-meter team pursuit, breaking the mark set one hour earlier by the Ukrainians. Guido Fulst, Robert Bartko, Daniel Becke and Jens Lehmann finished in 3 minutes, 59.710 seconds, beating Ukraine for the gold medal. In the semifinals, the Ukrainian team of Oleksandr Fedenko, Oleksandr Symonenko, Sergiy Matveyev and Sergiy Cheernyavskyy finished in 4:00.830, breaking the mark set one night earlier by the Germans in the quarterfinals. The velodrome in Sydney has proven to be one of the world's fastest venues through the first four days of the games, yielding three world and seven Olympic records.
