Nine days ago Australian Cathy Freeman became part of Olympic history when she lit the cauldron. On Monday, Freeman made history by winning the 400 meters, becoming the first Aborigine to win individual Olympic gold. After crossing the finish line in 49.11 seconds, Freeman carried a double-sided Australian and Aboriginal flag around the track. In his final Olympic Games, American Michael Johnson successfully defended his 400-meter title with a time of 43.84 seconds.
