Champion diver takes another plunge
21-year old Chinese diving star Fu Ming Xia (pronounced: fu' ming-chow) is aiming for her fourth Olympic gold medal in Sydney. She was the youngest diving world champion ever at the age of 12. That was followed by Olympic gold in Barcelona at age 13, making her China's youngest-ever Olympic champion. At the Atlanta games in 1996, Fu Ming Xia won two more gold medals at the age of 17. But soon after, she walked away from the sport to concentrate on her education. Now she's seeking her fourth Olympic gold medal at the 2000 games in Sydney. "I have never thought about whether I can win or lose in the competition," she says. "I think I need to grasp each day and this is very crucial. If I am capable enough, I will be able to get what I want." At 22 years old, an age when most athletes are just reaching their prime, Fu Ming Xia is not only fighting other divers, but both time and herself in an attempt to once again reach Olympic glory.
