Q&A Venus Williams on the OlympicsPosted: Tuesday June 06, 2000 12:26 PM
Venus Williams, ranked No. 4 in world on the WTA Tour, answered questions about the 2000 Olympic Games during the French Open in Paris. Question: I'm curious about the Olympics, something you talked about a lot a few months ago. After all these injuries, is it still important to go? At this point, you're fighting for a spot with Serena? Williams: I am? Question: Yes. Williams: What does this mean? Question: It means there's three singles spots for the U.S. team? And it goes by ranking. Right now it's Lindsay, yourself, Monica, Serena is fourth. Williams: Well, we both want to be there. If Serena is not there, maybe I won't go, but I don't know. We'll see. Question: You could play doubles together. Williams: You're right. You're right. We'll see. I don't know if I could go all that way to Australia without Serena. Question: So you might not be that interested? Williams: I really am interested. I fought for my place. It's my space. It shouldn't be occupied by anyone else, unless an unforseen occurrence happens. Question: Why is it special to play in the Olympics? Williams: Because this is something that I've always watched since I can remember. My Dad taped it. We always watched it, all the swimming. Unfortunately, not too much tennis. But all the other events that they do televise, we watched every one of them. This is something I think everyone grows up with, especially if you're a sports player. Question: Is there another sport you'd like to be an Olympian in? Williams: Archery.
