Redgrave couldn't resist chance to go to Sydney
The lure of another Olympic gold medal simply proved too irresistible for England's Steven Redgrave. The British rower has four consecutive gold medals under his belt, and is now going for a fifth. A nine-time world champion, and 3-time Commonwealth Champion, Redgrave, who battling diabetes, announced his retirement after the Atlanta Games in 1996. But his love of the sport proved too much. (SOC) "Coming out of Atlanta, obviously the statement I made and the build-up to it was very intense, and I felt that was going to be it," Redgrave says. "I didn't want to carry on anymore. But even two or three days afterwards, I started thinking the Sydney Olympics would be a tremendous games to be at. I think it is going to be the best Olympics ever, and I felt that I wanted to be a part of that." Redgrave knows he faces a strong field in Sydney, with the Australian squad in particular big rivals for the gold. But the British rower is clearly confident that his experience and talent will help his team to that title.
