Voronin has burst onto world high jump stage
After a decade of domination in the world of high jumping, Cuba's Xavier Sotomayor is expected to face a tough competition at the Sydney Olympics. Vyacheslav Voronin, who burst onto the world stage with a stunning performance at the 1999 World Championships, has emerged as Sotomayer's greatest challenger leading up to the Games. Voronin says Sotomayor will be just one of many challengers in Sydney. "I'll certainly try to take him on, but I think in Sydney it won't be only Sotomayor who will jump high," Voronin. "Among the contenders will be Artur Partyko and Konstantin Matusevich, who as I know approaches high jump a lot more professionally this year. So, the Olympics will be a hot contest indeed." A devout Orthodox Christian, Voronin won the European Indoor championships in Ghent, Belgium in February this year clearing 2.37 meters. Other top competitors at this year's Games will be young Canadian Mark Boswell and Matt Hemingway of the U.S. But they all may be looking upward when the medals are passed out. Last year, the authoritative Track & Field News magazine selected Voronin as one of the top 10 athletes in the world.
