Ellerbe leads U.S. in debut of hammer throw
For the first time in the history of the modern Olympic Games, women will compete in the hammer throwing competition. The top hopeful from the United States is Dawn Ellerbe. "It's just a feeling I can't describe right now," Ellerbe says. "To be going to the Olympics. To think of, like when I was in high school I wasn't even a highly recruited athlete and now I'm a U.S. champion." The 26-year-old from New York is a five-time national champion. Ellerbee trains hard, putting in four hours a day of throwing and weight training. A perfect throw appears effortless. "Those are some of the best throws, it's just when, sometimes it's once in a lifetime you have a throw like that and sometimes you can have a whole competition where all of your throws are like that, and it's just, most of the time your best throws are the ones that just feel effortless and everything just clicks together." The women's hammer throw competition begins September 27th.
