CNNSI.com has compiled a list of commonly used supplements that are banned by international athletics organizations.
Alertness   
Name of drug:  Amphetamines, Caffeine, Cocaine, Ephedrine 
Form:  Different types range from tablets to liquids to injections 
Effects:  Increases rate of heart, lungs, brain and central nervous system. 
Testing:  All of the above are tested for, so athletes combine with masking drugs and blood doping (replacement). 
Endurance   
Name of drug:  Erythropoitein (EPO) 
Form:  Injections over 6-8 week period 
Effects:  Boosts production of red blood cells that carry oxygen. 
Testing:  EPO won't show in urine testing, which is an official test. EPO will show in medical tests, which are not official. 
Injury recovery   
Name of drug:  Morphine, Methadone, Heroin, Pethidine 
Form:  Orally or intravenously  
Effects:  Depresses the nervous system to dull pain and create euphoria. 
Testing:  All off the above are tested for, so athletes can only attempt to cheat urine test with clean sample. 
Steadiness   
Name of drug:  Beta blockers 
Form:  Orally or liquid form 
Effects:  Lowers blood pressure and reduces heart rate to reduce the effect of adrenaline on the body. 
Testing:  Beta blockers produce more blood in the urine and are readily detectable. 
Strength and Power   
Name of drug:  Steroids (Synthetic derivatives of testosterone) 
Form:  Orally or by injection into large muscles or the testes 
Effects:  Mimics muscle-building qualities of testosterone. 
Testing:  Steroids will show in urine testing, so athletes are readily caught.  
Weight loss or gain   
Name of drug:  Diuretics 
Form:  Orally 
Effects:  Causes kidneys to produce more salt and eliminate body water 
Testing:  Diuretics can wash out of the system or weaken, allowing athletes to time against urine tests
