AJAX AMSTERDAM
TEAM NOTES
Coach: Danny Blind (since March 2005) Dutch League
Record: 24-5-5
Rank: Second, 77 points
Last Result: 2-1 win vs. FC Groningen, May 22
Streak: Won 8 After a weak first half in which FC Groningen took the lead just before the break, Rafael van der Vaart scored the eqaulizer in his last game for Ajax - he will most likely go to German side Hamburg SV - and right winger Daniel de Ridder tallied the winner 13 minutes before time. Ajax's average home attendance decreased by less than 1 percent to 48,571. Wesley Sneijder and Ryan Babel were the club's top scorers with seven goals each. Ajax and newly elected FC Omniworld (from nearby Almere), which will play in the Second Division next season, reached a five-year agreement of collaboration. Hatem Trabelsi served out his contract which will expire next summer. PSV Eindhoven and Arsenal FC showed serious interest in the 27-year-old defender. Ajax is interested in the return of Michael Reiziger to Amsterdam. The defender may leave his club, Middlesbrough FC, this summer, despite his contract running until 2006. PSV is also keen on signing him. Rafael van der Vaart admitted that he reached an agreement with Hamburger SV last Saturday. According to him, Ajax and HSV have to negotiate the transfer fee. Despite the interest of English giants Arsenal FC and Manchester United FC, Nigel de Jong will stay another year in Amsterdam. De Jong was elected "Best player of Ajax" by his own fans. The club signed Emmanuel Boakye from its own youth academy. The Finnish twins Niklas and Henrik Moisander signed one-year extensions to their contracts. Both played for the Ajax Reserves this season. If Edgar Davids (Internazionale FC) decides to return to the Netherlands, his former club Ajax and AZ, where his former coach Louis van Gaal is coach next season, are both interested in the 32-year-old midfielder.
