D.C. tops Tottenham 1-0 in friendly Posted: Friday October 18, 2002 10:44 AMATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- U.S. Major League Soccer club D.C. United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on Thursday in a benefit game at White Hart Lane in London. D.C. became the first professional American club to play a friendly in the home of an English Premier League side. "Tonight was a great advertisement for Major League Soccer," said United coach Ray Hudson, a native of Newcastle, England. "We played attractive, attacking soccer in a big-time atmosphere against a first-class opponent and got a deserved result." Many of Tottenham's former greats -- including Paul Gascoigne, Juergen Klinsmann and David Ginola -- returned for the benefit match played to support former Hotspur players who have since fallen on hard times. In the 85th minute, Guest player Wade Barrett broke the seal. After collecting the ball in midfield, Richie Williams spotted Moreno, whose flick on to Barrett left him free in the box, and San Jose's All-Star defender calmly beat Lars Hirschfeld for the tally.
