LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) -- Switzerland striker Eren Derdiyok has been ruled out for several weeks after stepping on a shard of glass, Bayer Leverkusen said Friday.

The Bundesliga club said in a statement that Derdiyok needed seven stitches after the accident occurred at his home.

German daily newspaper Bild reported that the accident happened on Thursday, when Derdiyok stepped on a piece of glass left behind after a toothbrush glass fell and shattered in his bathroom.

The 23-year-old Derdiyok has to rest his left foot for two weeks before he can begin training again.

The injury rules him out of the Champions League match against Barcelona on Feb. 14, and makes him doubtful for Switzerland's friendly against Argentina in Bern on Feb. 29.

Derdiyok has scored nine goals in all competitions this season.
