PARIS (AP) -- Lothar Matthaeus of Germany keeps
setting World Cup records. On Monday, the 37-year-old utility player
took over as all-time leader in the number of World Cup minutes played with
1,958 -- eight more than Uwe Seeler, who played 1,950 minutes in 21 matches
for Germany in the 1960s and 1970s. Diego Maradona of Argentina is
third, with 1,943 minutes in 21 matches. Starting in Germany's 2-1
second-round victory over Mexico,
Matthaeus increased to 24 matches his record for the most World Cup games.
He had broken the previous record of 21 by playing in Germany's first-round
draw with Yugoslavia.
Seeler and Maradona had shared the previous record with Matthaeus.
Matthaeus now has 15 victories, six draws and three losses in his cup
career. He also stands third in the total number of international
matches played with 128. Saudi
Arabian goalkeeper Majed Abdullah is record holder with 147
international matches played, followed by Swedish goalkeeper Thomas Ravelli
who played 143.
