LONDON (AP) -- The chairman of the English Football Association
wants Glenn Hoddle to lead England into
the next World Cup despite the team's second-round exit from France '98.
Keith Wiseman was quoted in Friday's Sun newspaper as saying England
was "in safe hands" with Hoddle as coach. "Glenn is only halfway
through his current agreement and when he wants a new one, we will talk,"
Wiseman said. Wiseman said the reaction of English fans after the
team's penalty shootout defeat to Argentina
showed how highly regarded Hoddle was. "It reflected our mood and
how we think of Glenn," he said. "The frustration is that we came back
knowing we were so close. "It is terrible to have to wait another four
years. I wish the next World Cup was in two weeks time, because we are
ready." Hoddle signed a four-year deal with the FA when he took over
as coach from Terry Venables in June 1996. The Sun revealed his 250,000
pound ($415,000) annual salary could be doubled in a new agreement.
