Coming to America, but later MetroStars agree to let Matthaeus stay longer at MunichPosted: Monday November 15, 1999 03:06 PM
MUNICH, Germany (AP) -- MetroStars' general manager Charlie Stillitano Monday agreed to let Lothar Matthaeus join the Major League Soccer club later than orginally planned. The 38-year-old German player, expected to be the American team's new star, was originally scheduled to leave Bayern in December and join the MetroStars on February 20. Instead he has asked to stay until March 8 to help out his injury-plagued club, Bayern Munich, during some key European matches. Other reports have said Matthaeus will seek to stay with Bayern through June. "If Lothar Matthaeus comes to New York after the Champions Cup match on March 8, he has enough time to get to know his teammates," Stillitano told the German sports agency, SID. Munich lost both the candidates to replace Matthaeus as the team's defensive stopper. Jens Jeremies was suspended for five Champions League matches for a brutal foul and Thomas Strunz is set to undergo a knee operation next week. Matthaeus tied retired Swedish goalie Thomas Ravelli's international record of 143 caps for a national team when he played Sunday for Germany in a friendly against Norway.
